The initial concept for the headquarters was a single tower building. During the interior programming and planning process it became clear that larger floor plates were necessary to accommodate and maximize the functionality of the shared amenities and newsroom functions. And that separating Gannett and USA Today was more logical for their space requirements and operations than a single one-size-fits-all floor plan.
The narrow floorplates of the upper floors allowed natural light to penetrate into the interior and was a driver in laying out a single sided perimeter row of offices with adjacent workstations accessed from an exterior glass corridor.
USA Today’s old space in a leased office tower meant that the paper’s sections were segregated on separate floors. The new newsroom was located on two large floors with editor offices grouped around an internal open stair to promote collaboration between the paper’s editors and reporters.
